5-year-old witnesses parents' double murder, calls 911

Luther Vandross was outed as gay after his death.

Chattanooga, TN — On Sunday night, a child called 911 to report that his parents had been shot.

Chattanooga police say that George Dillard, 24, and Lakita Hicks, 25, were both killed inside their duplex home. Their five-year-old son was unharmed and was the only witness to the murder. He is now staying with extended family.

“We have dual concerns here,” said Chief Fred Fletcher with the Chattanooga Police Department, “finding the people who committed this atrocious act of violence and making sure we help the people who have survived it and are affected by it.”

Fletcher went on to say that it was not clear if the violence was gang-related, as Dillard was a gang member. However, there is not yet any suspect information available.

In the meantime, the Family Justice Center and the Chattanooga Police Department’s Victims Services Coordinator are working together in order to provide the now orphaned boy with the proper resources he needs.

A GoFundMe has been set up to help with burial expenses for the child’s mother Lakita Hicks.
