A Detroit police sergeant’s Facebook post has now sparked an internal investigation after the sergeant compared Beyoncé and her dancers to the KKK.
The police sergeant apparently had a problem with Beyoncé’s Super Bowl 50 halftime show outfits, which many have speculated were based on the Black Panthers to honor their 50th anniversary. In a Facebook post, the sergeant showed Beyoncé and her dancers and then an image of KKK members, saying, “If the dance troupe at the top is okay for this year’s half-time show, then the one at a bottom should be okay for next year, right?”
“I received calls indirect and direct from employees throughout the organization troubled by it,” Chief of Police James Craig said. “Certainly this does not and shouldn’t represent our police officers.”
While the post was retracted and an apology was issued, the chief said that the fact it had been posted at all was troubling.
“We work in a city that’s certainly well over 80 percent African-American and to post something that has to do with a hate group like the Ku Klux Klan is problematic,” he said.
The comments made by the Detroit sergeant were similar to ones made by Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clark during an appearance on Fox News.
“Would it be acceptable if a white band came out in hoods and white sheets in the same sort of fashion?” Clark asked. “We would be appalled and outraged. The Black Panthers are a subversive hate group in America. I think she could have done a better job.”
