CLEVELAND (AP) — A jury has awarded $22 million to a man who says he was severely beaten in 2012 by a suburban Cleveland police detective, locked in a storage closet with no toilet for four days and given nothing to eat or drink except for a carton of milk.
Relatives of 48-year-old Arnold Black testified that he suffers from physical and emotional problems caused by a beating that required surgery to remove dried blood from his brain. The jury delivered its verdict Tuesday after a three-day trial.
The East Cleveland law director defending the lawsuit didn’t show up for trial. Willa Hemmons told The Associated Press on Wednesday that she didn’t think the trial would be held because of an appeal she filed with the Ohio Supreme Court to delay proceedings.
