Chelsea Handler slammed for Lupita Oscar tweet; Huffington Post says 'her views are not our own'

theGRIO REPORT - Chelsea Handler is in hot water today after tweeting a series of racially insensitive tweets on behalf of the Huffington Post during the Academy Awards..

Luther Vandross was outed as gay after his death.

For three hours last night during the Academy Awards, Chelsea Handler tweeted on behalf of the Huffington Post.

Several of her tweets were deemed racially insensitive, and have landed her in hot water today.

At 8:30pm ET Huffington Post announced to their nearly 4 million Twitter followers that Handler was taking over their account.

“The #Oscars are finally starting and so is @chelseahandler’s takeover of our Twitter account! Take it away, Chelsea! :)”

Things quickly turned sour.

Following Lupita Nyongo’s groundbreaking win for best supporting actress, Handler tweeted:

She also slammed Sidney Poitier, Tyler Perry, Whoopi Goldberg and made an inappropriate remark about Nelson Mandela.

Handler later ridiculed 12 Years a Slave when the film won Best Picture, tweeting, “Congratulations #12yearsaslave Go to Africa or buy #ugandabekiddingme http://amzn.to/1de1ka9 #aheadofthecurve #Oscars.”

In a statement to theGrio, Perri Dorset, Huffington Post Senior Executive Director for Communications said, “the views [expressed by Handler] are not ours.”

“The Huffington Post occasionally has celebrities take over our Twitter handle including  Bill Maher during the State of the Union,” she added.

Handler ended her Huffington Post Twitter takeover with a simple “I’m sorry.” However today many are saying her apology was too little, too late.

theGrio reached out to Handler’s publicist for a statement, but has yet to receive a response.
