The overnights showed that the ratings for the Oscars were at a 23.4 household rating/36 share from 8:30 to midnight ET, down 6% from last year’s 25.0/38 and 16% below the 10-year high of 27.9/41 from two years ago.

The drop in ratings might be at least partially attributed to the controversy that has surrounded the awards show, with the hashtag #OscarsSoWhite trending as the Academy has found itself in the middle of a backlash for its lack of diversity. The nominations for the major acting categories and directing categories were completely white, with many movies seemingly snubbed. A few notable celebrities, including Will Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith, had also called for a boycott of the Oscars prior to the show.

However, the show was still the top-rated broadcast on television and brought in around 34 million viewers, with Chris Rock hosting and blasting the Academy that had invited him for its lack of transparency while Leonardo DiCaprio won his first Oscar and broke the Internet meme that has been following him for years.
