Brooklyn teen called friend moments before fatal stabbing: ‘He was asking me if I was in the area and could help’

theGrio REPORT - John Garrett, 17, was fatally stabbed on Wednesday just moments after speaking with his friend on the phone.

Wednesday, John Garrett, 17, was fatally stabbed in front of an apartment building – just moments after speaking with his friend on the phone.

“He was on the phone with me,” his close friend, Kadale Tribble, 20, said Friday.

“Something [was] going on. He was talking kind of fast and I was confused. He was asking me if I was in the area and could help him in a situation he was in. He called me at 11:29 and the conversation ended at 11:31.”

Only moments after that call, Garrett was stabbed and later died at Kings County Hospital.

“I knew him since he was 9,” Tribble said. “He was laid back. He liked to travel … He wasn’t interested in any drama.”

Police are still investigating the stabbing and have since released footage of a man and woman near the area that they are looking for in order to question them.

Jamal Joseph, 18, was also stabbed less than a block away. Joseph and Garrett were friends in middle school. However, police do not think that the stabbings are related, though arrests have not been made in either case. Joseph was stabbed after bumping into a teenage male and following him into a sneaker store, where he put him into a headlock. The teenager fought back and stabbed Joseph in the neck.
