Lupita Nyong'o on #OscarsSoWhite: 'I stand with my peers who are calling for change'

Luther Vandross was outed as gay after his death.

Lupita Nyong’o, who won an Oscar in 2014 for her role in 12 Years a Slave, is frustrated by the #OscarsSoWhite.

While the actress did not say that she would be joining others in the call to boycott the awards entirely, she did express her annoyance at the nominations’ lack of any non-white names in the major acting categories, among others.

Nyong’o took to Instagram in order to put her words out there, calling out the lack of diversity and praising her peers who continue to tell stories despite the system stacked against them.

“I am disappointed by the lack of inclusion in this year’s Academy Awards nominations,” Lupita posted on Tuesday. “It has me thinking about unconscious prejudice and what merits prestige in our culture.”

She then went on to say, “The awards should not dictate the terms of art in our modern society, but rather be a diverse reflection of the best of what our art has has to offer today.”

“I stand with my peers who are calling for change in expanding the stories that are told and recognition of the people who tell them,” she finished.

She posted her words in an image along with the caption: “‘Not everything that is faced can be changed. But nothing can be changed until it is faced.’ – James Baldwin #manystoriesmanyvoices
