A 17-year-old boy shot himself dead at a police station after his mother had taken him there to surrender. He was suspected of having killed his girlfriend’s lover in what police are calling a “troubling love triangle.”

According to the teen’s friend Darian Mitchell, the 17-year-old found out his girlfriend was cheating on him with 25-year-old veteran James Ayala. The teen then asked both his girlfriend and Ayala to come to Mitchell’s house, where he shot Ayala.

“When he shot him, his girlfriend started screaming and then he ran,” Mitchell recalled. “And then he shot again, and then everyone started coming out and screaming.”

Hours after the shooting, at around 5 a.m., Sgt. Cedrick Collier approached a car in the parking lot of Harris County sheriff’s office that had its headlights on. Collier said that there was a woman in the car who claimed that she had brought her son to turn himself in for the shooting that had occurred earlier.

Collier then drew his weapon and asked the teen if what his mother said was true. The teen replied “yes” and then stepped behind the vehicle and shot himself in the head.

The shooting is currently under investigation, and the name of the teenager involved has not been released to the public.
