South Side Chicago rapper Lil Reese, a friend of fellow Chicago rapper Chief Keef, is being met with a flood of criticism after a video showing him brutally beating a woman went viral this week.

According to the Chicago Times Sun, the graphic video (NSFW) shows a young woman asking a group of young men to leave her home. She gets into an argument with one of the men, who is suspected to be the 19-year-old Def Jam Recordings artist, and he attacks her as she screams and protests.

Reese, whose real name is Tavares Taylor, took to his Twitter account yesterday to defend himself. He said the video was recorded “years ago” and blamed “broke and bored” haters for releasing it.

The tweet has since been deleted.

Chicago Police are not currently investigating the incident because they don’t know the victim’s identity or when and where the attack took place, but GlobalGrind reportedly identified the woman in the video as a recent high school graduate living in the Chicago area.

The young woman responded to the video on her Facebook page, condemning Reese for his actions. She also dated the video to a year ago.

The short clip has garnered more than 1.8 million views on the site World Star Hip Hop (as of Friday at 2:20 p.m.) and it’s sparking a debate among Internet users about whether or not Reese’s actions were warranted. Some comments on the website have called for people to boycott Reese’s music. Others have defended the rapper’s actions, blaming the woman for provoking him.
