Rachel Dolezal sued Howard University for racial discrimination
Rachel Dolezal, the former Spokane NAACP president who was recently outed as white by her parents, sued Howard University in 2002 for racial discrimination, claiming that she was turned down for teaching posts and scholarships because she is white.
Dolezal, who then was using the name Rachel Moore, filed the suit against the university as well as Professor Alfred Smith, the chairman of the university’s art department. In the suit, she “claimed discrimination based on race, pregnancy, family responsibilities and gender.”
The suit also mentioned an incident in which her artwork was removed from a display in February 2001 because the exhibition was “motivated by a discriminatory purpose to favor African-American students over” her.
As a final insult, she claimed that the university was “permeated with discriminatory intimidation, ridicule, and insult.”
Judge Zoe Bush dismissed the suit in February 2004 and ordered Dolezal to pay the university $2,758.50 for a “Bill of Costs” and another $1000 for an “obstructive and vexatious” court filing.
