theGRIO REPORT - Shot in black and white, here’s a glimpse of a day in the life of Chirlane McCray, the First Lady of New York City.
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio describes her as not just his wife but his “number one advisor… and chief strategist.” But first lady of New York City Chirlane McCray humbly refers to herself as someone who wants “to do the work we’ve been fighting for.” She is only the city’s second African-American first lady and the first in 20 years. Her husband was elected mayor of New York City in a landslide this past November.
As the recently appointed chair of the Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City, a nonprofit organization that promotes partnerships between the City and the private sector, Ms. McCray has pledged to make issues that affect families and young people the centerpiece of her agenda. And she’s just getting started.
TheGrio had a chance to shadow Ms. McCray for an entire day and capture her work through photography. On a warm, late-April day in New York City, Ms. McCray spoke candidly of her lifelong love of the arts and passion for young people.
The day ahead proved rewarding for her: a poetry reading and a youth event at the Tribeca Film Festival were a part of her schedule. Shot in black and white, here’s a glimpse of a day in the life of Chirlane McCray, the first lady of New York City.
